BJ Upton’s Cuz

Today I went to the St. Petersburg celebration of Juneteenth.  If you do not know what it is check out this website http://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm.  Anyway, during the celebration they put on a Negro Baseball League game.  I walked over with the team right before it was going to begin.  Once we got there, this guy was tightening his belt.  So I made the comment, “Look at you, all skinny like BJ Upton.”  The guy laughed and said, “BJ is my cousin but I don’t call him BJ.”  I laughed too, at the shock that out of all the baseball players I could of picked I said BJ but something about this guy really reminded me of him…little did I know, he was a relative.  That is what I call a small but very cool world.  I wish I got the guys name or contact info because I think it would of been a great piece on this guy who played in a Negro Baseball League game on Juneteenth and his cousin(s) play professional ball.

Holy shit, that is awesome!!! How was the game, I didn’t manage to catch any of it. Did Colin really play? That’s what Judson told me.

The Universe is truly a small place. Thanks so much for the backgrounder on Juneteenth as I didn’t know the history behind the particular day. During that period of history, Lincoln and the federal government had lost most of their control over Florida and Texas along with the territories inbetween. It was a tumultuous time and plenty of people did not recognize the federal government as the national government. If you ever get the chance, do read about the western European influences on the southeast through to Texas from the 1600s forward. It really does serve to explain how things are now. Our campus library has three really awesome books that cover this period. I read them earlier this year for a freelance research project.
